Eggborn acknowedged that with the community’s malfunctioning septic fields, “there are bound to be some wells unsafe” due to contamination from sewage. “The two go hand in hand,” he added.
“It’s not our intention to close down the town,” said William Burke, the health department’s chief sanitarian for the five-county area. If a complaint is received, however, “we would have to investigate,” he said. And if a violation is discovered, “we might have to make provisions to have it stopped ...We can try to find an answer but that’s not always possible.”
