Low Protection Level
But it’s cats, not dogs, which have the health department worried. According to local vets, the level of rabies immunization in cats is low. “Some people have the misconception that cats can’t contract rabies from wild animals," Einarson said.
While cat fights with foxes, the most common wild animal carrier, are rare, cats, like all mammals, are susceptible to rabies, he noted.
