The center of the sun moves directly above the Tropic of Cancer on June 21, at 7:45 a.m. EDT, ushering in the season of summer, according to Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., Director of the Science Museum of Virginia.
This moment, when the sun reaches the most northerly point in its annual motion,, is known as the summer solstice, from the Latin words "sol” meaning sun and "status’* meaning to come to a stop.
“After the sun moves above the Tropic of Cancer, it ceases its northward motion and will begin to move slowly southward again," Dr. Knappenberger explained.
June 21 is the day of the year with the longest period of sunlight The sun will rise and set further north than at any other time of the year.
Within the Arctic circle, the sun will not set but will remain above the horizon, producing the phenomenon of the "midnight sun." In Fairbanks, Alaska, golfers will begin to tee off at midnight for a tournament.
