“We’ve been hurt badly,” Superintendent Davit] Gangel said of proposed cuts in state aid to Rappahannock schools.
Rappahannock was one of 14 “wealthy” localities across Virginia picked out for 12 percent reductions in state aid for next year.
Dr. Gangel said in an interview he would have to start the process of developing next year’s budget ovef. “A lot of what I’d hoped to do won’t be possible,” he said,
Dr. Gangel had originally hoped that increasing enrollment would wipe out cuts, leaving the schools with approximately level funding for next year. /
He had also hoped to prepare a budget that woulil not have required a significant increase in local fundg. “Now all bets are off, ” he said.
The current budget was prepared with an estimate of an average daily membership of 904. Based on September enrollment the state is now estimating Rappahannock’s ADM as 931 for this year and 945 for next year.
Indeed the funds coming in for basic aid and other categories of state aid that are dependent on enrollment do show increases, but not enough to make up for the decreases labelled “SOQ reduction.”
