Christmas.

Before malls and muzak, Christmas began on Christmas day. Trees were decorated and gifts were wrapped on Christmas Eve, but only after the children were in bed. The faithful welcomed Christmas in church and celebrated it for 12 days. In fact, there are some fine traditionalists who grant Christmas an additional eight days. (See your pastor if you want to know more about this last point.)

One need be neither religious nor nostalgic to benefit from tradition. For example, I seldom get my annual greeting cards out before early January.' I feel no guilt; after all, it’s still Christmas. And, in the spirit of the season, I wish you and your readers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. W. MICHAEL MAHONEY
