Phil Irwin said, “The sloppiest part of the zoning ordinance is the provision for family subdivision. There are countless examples of the wrong size parcels in the wrong place sold out of the family. ”

Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson asked, “How could you create a family subdivision without increasing density?”

County Administrator John McCarthy answered, “Typically, what’s waived is road standards.”

“We give people precious little in this county,” Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said. “I see a good faith effort to tighten up on some abuses. I’ve heard about abuses, but there are far more abuses by land investors putting land in land use than there are in family subdivisions.”

Hampton District representative Mike Massie said, “I think we should keep in family subdivision, but I don’t think we should be a haven for people from other counties to move in here to do family subdivisions. I’m in favor of the five-year waiting period.”

“I think we should provide for family transfers,” Supervisor chairman Hubert Gilkey said. “We’re trying to give long-time residents an opportunity to pass something on to their children.”
