Coming off a week-long rest, the Rappahannock Panthers traveled across the mountains Tuesday to face Page County — and were shaken by the trip.
“The atmosphere at Page County destroyed our game,” Coach Gary Leake reported following the contest, which Rappahannock lost, 8063. Although he declined to offer details, the coach did say, “It was pre, tty good psychology — if you want to win that way.”
The Rappahannock Panther allowed Page to get out to an early lead, and it put them into a hole that they never got out of, the coach said.
Combined with trying to over. come the early deficit, “we got -caught up in the atmosphere,” Coach Leake said. “We played the atmosphere the wrong way. It got per’ - Bonal — each player tried to turn the game around himself. We got out of flour game plan, out of the team offense and defense.”
The coach said he was disappointed by the game, but could’t .really fault his players. “Experi,.enced teams can recognize what is happening off the court and channel it in a positive direction on the court. ( Unfortunately, we channeled it neg", atively.”
He said he told the team after the game, “They walked in winners, lost by the score, but they still walked ■out winners.”
Paul Hitt led the Panther offense with 20 points, and Dearl Cloud and Daniel Deal came off the bench to ~"cleliver 11 and 10 points to the offensive effort, respectively. Cloud and Deal also led the Panthers defensively, snatching seven rebounds each off the boards. Jason Butler rounded out the team’s top scorers with another 10 points.
