The Virginia State Police are urging families to participate in the annual, national Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, Feb. 1016, and to “Buckle Up for Love!”
“Valentine’s Day is a good time for parents to show how much they love their children by taking the time to buckle them up correctly in child safety seats and safety belts,” said Col. W.F. Corvello, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police. “When used correctly, child safety seats are extremely reliable in preventing deaths and injuries to young passengers,” he said.
Correctly used, safety seats and belts are 71 percent effective in preventing fatalities and 67 percent effective in prevening serious injuries to children under the age of five, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Unfortunately, child safety seats are misused about 33 percent of the time, according to a study conducted by NHTSA. The most coipmon errors are improper routing of the vehicle’s safety belt to anchor the seat, infant seats facing forward rather than rearward and seat harnesses or shields fastened incorrectly.
In 1989 highway crashes killed 723 child passengers under five nationwide. That same year, child safety systems saved 238 lives and since 1982, the systems have saved 1,324 children. r-y-'J ;—-——
