On Jan. 28 I had the opportunity to address a rally, organized to protest Governor Wilder’s position on the removal of American flags, yellow ribbons, and other patriotic symbols from Virginia’s D.M.V. offices; as a show of support for our troops in the Persian Gulf. Over one hundred people gathered at the Capitol to express their outrage at the Governor.
Sensing a surge in adverse political damage to his future plans, the Governor reversed his original position just hours before the rally. Governor Wilder announced he would allow state workers to display patriotic symbols “so long as they did not interfere with their official duties.” Chalk this one up as a victory for our 1st Amendment rights.
