with petition

The Board of Supervisors received a petition, opposing the proposed middle school at its monthly meeting Monday.
Tom Von Fange presented the petition, which he said had been signed by 690 citizens from the county, and said they “strongly oppose building a school or buying land on which to build a school.”
Mr. Von Fange said there were three issues: “Is another building needed? Will it improve education? What will the tax burden be?” He added, “We’re proud of Rappahannock. We’ve made it with two schools, and they are excellent schools. Money is the heart of the problem.”
He said that spending on education has increased dramatically when “business leaders agree that the public education ship is sinking.” He said that he was a former teacher with three children in school, in first, third and fourth grades. “The true experts are parents and school teachers,” he said. He noted that no teachers had spoken in favor of the middle school at the public hearing on school expansion. He said that that showed the teachers were afraid to speak up or “not one teacher was affected enough to say, ‘We have a problem.’ ”
He said those who signed the petition realize “there is overcrowding” and urged the supervisors to consider “adding a few rooms” to the elementary
