To the Editor:
In 1991, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank supplied nearly $9 million worth of food to its 765 charitable member agencies. Those agencies, primarily churches, provide free food to the needy in 25 Virginia counties. Due to the recession, the demand for food was up 20 percent over 1990.
Our Thomas Jefferson Area branch in Charlottesville serves Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison, Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna, Orange and Nelson counties and the city of Charlottesville. During 1991, the branch provided food valued at $1.5 million to 110 area agencies.
Three Rappahannock agencies combined to distribute over $70,000 worth of free food to needy local families. The community should be very proud of its accomplishment.
We have high hopes that more area churches wiU take advantage of our program this year.
We learned, during the economic downturn year of 1991, that our faithful donors don’t stop doing good when the economy is not doing well. In fact, a remarkable increase in cash donations covered our overhead to handle the additional volume of food distribution.
We wish to praise our agencies and their countless volunteers who serve with dedication as our network’s delivery system to the poor. Also, we commend the sincere humanitarian concerns of local food
