But against Page Tuesday the Panthers showed enthusiasm and team play in breaking up Page’s offense. Rappahannock outscored Page 20-8 in the third quarter to put the game away, including 10 unanswered points.
Guard Damian Muriel had nine assists and closed down Page’s best player.
The Panthers’ record i3 now 4-12 overall, 3-9 in the district. They play at Central Friday and at Strasburg Tuesday. Both opponents are among the district’s top teams; Central is ranked first in the state in the AP’s single-A poll of sportswriters.
JVs lose four
The JV team lost to George Mason 49-44 Jan. 24, to Clarke 45-23 Jan. 28, to Brentsville 59-40 Jan. 30 and to Page 57-39 Tuesday night. -
Tuesday night, Jason Settle led the Panthers in scoring against the Mustangs with 15, the only player in double figures. Against Clarke, the top team in the JV standings, Ray Atkins, Shane Lambert and Raymond Williams each had five, but poor shooting and defensive lapses doomed the JVs.
In the Brentsville game Lambert had 12 with 7 rebounds to lead the team.
Tuesday night against Page, Settle had 14 points, including 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point stripe, Lambert scored nine and Atkins also had nine.
lunior Panthers go 7-2
Standout Junior Panther player Jon Butler drained both ends of a one-and-one with no time on the clock to send the game against Warrenton Junior High into overtime Monday, and Rappahannock came back to win it, 50-48.
Butler, averaging 17 points a game, had 22 points to lead Rappahannock. Tim O’Meara had “his best game,” said Coach Leake, scoring 11 points. Mark Jenkins had 10.
