The Rappahannock High varsity volleyball team takes on Manassas Park in a key Bull Run District matchup at home, 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10. If the Panthers win that, game they will be guaranteed a shot \ at the four-team district tournament.
Rappahannock and Clarke are battling for the fourth slot, and if the Panthers advance it will be their first post-season bid in team history.
The squad won one and lost one this week, increasing its record to 85 overall, 3-4 in the district.
Strasburg beat Rappahannock handily last Friday, 15-5, 15-6 in what Coach Paul Paratore called “the worst game I have seen in my two years. . . . They didn’t show up.”
But against George Mason Monday night, everyone played in a contest that wasn’t even as close as the score, 15-6, 15-12. Melissa Alther, Shannon Walter and Alice Reeve all drew praise from Coach Paratore, particularly sophomore Walter.
It was the third win in three games against Mason this year, a team that Rappahannock had never beat prior to this season. This was a non-district game against a district team.
The JV team continued to struggle, losing 15-5, 15-6 to Strasburg and taking Mason to three games before falling, 15-6, 12-15, 15-8. In the second game of the Mason match Coach Paratore put in three substitutes - Angie Clark, Cathy Martin and Sherry Shaw - who won it for them. Starter Laura McNear, only an 8th grader, also played extremely well. Coach Paratore said it was McNear’s “best game of the year. Early in the season she showed promise, and recently has really turned it on."
Varsity basketball beats Page by 15
The varsity basketball team avenged an earlier overtime loss to Page County Tuesday night, putting four players in double figures for the first time all year and winning by 15 points, 71-56.
Jason Henry had 23, James Roy scored 15, leading scorer Michael Williams added 15 and Kevin Jolliffe came off the bench to contribute 10. Williams is third in scoring in the Bull Run District, averaging about 18 points pier game.
Rappahannock has played well in three of its past four games, said Coach Gary Leake, the only exception being a 61-5(5 loss to Brentsville Jan. 30 that was all the more embarassing because the Panthers beat
