Mr. Moore said state guidelines require 50-foot right of way standards for road improvements. The budget for road improvements has been running about $620,000 per year, but had been reduced to $570,000 and might be further reduced. He said improvements within the 30-foot right-of-way would have to come out of the department’s maintenance budget, which also covers the cost of routine grading and snow removal.
Mr. Moore said the highway department could not dig into the embankment very far without causing fences to fall down. He agreed to meet with residents to see if improvements could be made without acquiring additional rights of way.
Marc Malik said the highway department needs a solution between widening the road with a 50-foot right-of-way and leaving the road alone.
