Charles Allen Brown remained free Wednesday, three days after the 27-year-old Sperryville man overpowered a guard and escaped from the Rappahannock County Jail.
Brown was charged with rape, sodomy and abduction in an incident involving a 16year-old girl that allegedly happened during the night of June 30, according to Sheriff John Henry Woodward. He surrendered to Maj. Ed Streapy July 6.
The sheriff said a group of prisoners were taken out into the jail’s exercise yard at 4:20 p.m. July 12. As deputy W.D. Dodson let himself out of the yard through a gate to the outside, Brown hit him from behind and knocked him down, then rushed through the gate.
Sheriff Woodward said Brown was last seen running down Porter Street toward Main Street. A search of the area around Washington lasted most of the night, Woodward said, but Brown was not found.
The next afternoon, Sheriff Woodward said, his office received a report that Brown had appeared at his parents’ home in Sperryville, where he was threatening members of his family. That report wasn’t true, he said, but Brown’s trail was picked up again.
