access to site and building the stadium foundation, a new Metro station and parking lots, Wilder said.
Skeptical state lawmakers, including Fisher and Howell, said residents have been calling to ask where bonding for a stadium was coming from and why it hasn’t been focused on education or transportation.
She called the timing for the Wilder-Cooke^tadium bond package “very ironic,” just months after Wilder vetoed a transportation bill that would have helped Northern Virginia.
“He just vetoed our transportation bond and that would have gone to referendum anyway,” she said, while Wilder’s proposed $130 million stadium bond won’t go to the public for approval.
“But we really do like the Redskins,” Howell said.
She couldn’t support public funding for a stadium that has no general admission seating, “especially if we can’t get in to see the game,” she said.
Fisher said the Northern Virginia delegation lobbied aggressively for a transportation bond package, believing that highway improvement projects would bring jobs to Northern Virginia. Wilder responded by vetoing the bill.
Both Fisher and Howell would like to hear more from the public before the General Assembly meets to debate the bond package.
