Library series
begins Sept. 11
Rappahannock County Library’s First Friday educational series was such a success last year that it has been decided to do it again, with a completely new line-up of programs, designed to appeal to everyone.
The first program will be Sept. 11, actually a second Friday because of the Labor Day weekend and is entitled “An Overview of the Grey Ghost.” The “Grey Ghost” was, of course, Col. John Mosby, Commander of “Mosby’s Rangers.” His force so controlled Northern Virginia during the Civil War that the counties of Fauquier and Loudoun became known as “Mosby’s Confed-. eracy.” Mosby’s lightning hit-andrun raids earned him the title “Grey Ghost” and he received promotions regularly throughout the war to the rank of Colonel, with a command of 800 men when the war ended.
Speakers for the program will include Jim Moyer and Tom Evans, authors of “Mosby’s Confederacy,”which is available at the library.
Also speaking will be Kenneth McAtee, whose grandfather served as a Mosby Ranger. McAtee is a talented photographer, with a collection of outstanding Mosby-related photographs.
The fourth speaker will be Virgil Carrington Jones, a renowned raconteur and author. His books have been the definitive works on Mosby for many years.
The Sept. 11 program on the Grey Ghost will start at 8 p.m. in the library’s meeting room, followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet and talk with the speakers. Due to limited seating, it is recommended that you arrive early. Free admission.
