lne choreographer, Linda Garner Miller, masterfully adapted the movement and dancing by a company of 20 to our small theater and Evil Dick Deadeye (Bruce Evans) brought humorous melodrama to the plot. Shades of Iago! The star-crossed lovers, Ralph Rackstraw and Josephine, performed by Steve Cramer and Deborah Thurlow respectively, not only sang with considerable eclat, but also displayed remarkable dexterity in their high-jinx and were effective in their comic stage business. Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of Admiralty, played by Ralph Cosham, clowned well as a bumbling bureaucrat, who at one point, having become instantly inebriated from drinking the contents of a flask, made a brilliant exit while unsuccessfully attempting to insert the flask into a hip pocket that wasn’t there.
The actors related well to one another. For instance, a fortunetelling scene between the Captain, Scott Benedict, and Little Buttercup was delightfully teasing and paced differently from the rest. Again, when the Captain gently punched Little B on the arm to make a point, Little B punched him right back. No sexual harassment there! Because Ashley Hancock is a man, and a large one, his dress and acting as a female made Little Buttercup’s role especially amusing.
The performers’ clarity of diction coupled with our closeness to the actors made the story easy to appreciate and understand.
