It wasn’t until 1946 that Mr. Coon began to study seriously. “I was really ready to learn at that point,” said Mr. Coon, "I literally absorbed everything I could.”
Mr. Coon, who belongs to the Capital Composer’s Association in Washington, D.C., said that his music is most definitely his business, although maybe not a greatly profitable one at this point.
The upcoming concert will be his first although he has had a number of musicales at his home and some of his music has been performed on various occasions. Mr. Coon holds to the “old musical traditions” in that he feels there is a lot . of contemporary music “that no one listens to because no one likes it.”
“Music is very close to language,” he said, “and there is a huge confusion going on these days with the explosion of information, instant communication and so forth.”
“A lot of people are struggling with new ways of saying things. Humanity has gotten mighty confused in the 20th century with so many rapid changes,” he said. “This confusion has led into all sorts of innovative new departures in music as well as anything else.”
“Music today often fails to communicate with people,” he added.
The upcoming concert will be cosponsored by Ki Theater and RAAC.“This has been an extremely busy time,” said Mr. Coon, but very exciting,” said Mr. Coon.
