Volunteers support the organization in many ways, and may choose whether or not to work directly with patients and their families. Volunteers who work with patients are well trained to assist hospice families in coping with the challenges of endstage disease.

"Hospice volunteers are a breed apart, because hospice work requires a blend of sensitivity, creativity and initiative" says Martha Sukites, Hospice of the Rapidan's volunteer coordinator. "The best volunteers are sensitive to the needs of others and • very giving of themselves. Hospice ■ work is a very personal and rewarding : way to give.”
