Libertarians think government should be reduced to a few basic functions, including defense, law enforcement and monetary regulation. They believe the free market will take care of most of society’s ills and that people know how to spend their money better than the government does.
“I think people are tired of big-govemment, socialist, cradle-to-the-grave programs,” Buchanan said.
“There might be people better qualified who have a better job or a better education, but we all agree on the same principles.”
Buchanan beliefs are basic and self-evident. He believes property owners can protect the environment better than federal regulators, that people can save for their retirement better than the Social Security Administration and that charities and private contributors can help the needy better than federal welfare programs.
He proposes eliminating the federal income tax, and paying for limited government functions with a national sales tax. He also advocates the legalization of drugs and prostitution.
