Cornell William Brooks, the Democratic candidate for the 10th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, knows that government can make a difference in the lives of its citizens.
“I am unapologetic in my belief that the heart of politics is public service,” said Brooks. “I am a beneficiary of Head Start, of scholarships and of student loans, and my dad went to college through ROTC. We have benefited from a lot of federal investments in education, fiscally responsible investments, and I believe in that.”
Brooks was born in a U.S. Army hospital in El Paso, Texas, where his father was a field artillery officer. He grew up in coastal South Carolina.
“My heart is in serving people,” said Brooks, who noted that somewhere between seminary and law school, he was ruined for corporate law. “My whole experience has been public interest law, where people either can’t afford a lawyer or oftentimes don’t know they need one.”
Brooks describes himself as a “fiscally conservative office seeker. The numbers have to add up; there has to be accountability; the public has to get what it pays for.”
His legislative agenda focuses on transportation, education and health care. He espouses a regional transportation authority which will involve all the “shareholders” from Northern Virginia, the District and Maryland in prioritizing the problems and developing long- and short-term solutions. Add to that a regional focus on better suburb-tosuburb transportation, and rail to Dulles. Buses to Dulles won’t solve the problem unless they “can levitate over traffic.”
