Two new Interactive Theatre workshops will be offered in February and March at the Healing Arts Center in Sperryville.
Through transformative and fun theatre games, exercises, and expressive movement, participants will dive into the realm of their inner potential to bring the body, voice and emotions alive. All is done within a safe, supportive atmosphere that encourages exploration and stretching one’s boundaries.
The workshops will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The first is called “Freeing Your Authentic Self through Creative Play.” The second is “The Search for Connection: Creating Community.”
The primary techniques in these workshops come from “Theater of Liberation,” a dynamic body of work based upon Brazilian visionary Augusto Boal’s “Theater of the Oppressed.”
“T.O.” was originally developed to give Brazilian peasants the awareness of their own community voice and is now used all over the world to teach conflict resolution, community building, and political and personal empowerment, using theater as a tool for transformation.
Theatre of Liberation uses many of the same interactive theatre exercises, with a slightly different focus called for by the differing realities experienced by North American participants.
It provides a structure for empowerment-based exploration with a group wishing to investigate common issues — awareness, personal growth, community building and problem solving.
An environment of respect and courage is established at the outset and reconfirmed at every step along the way.
Workshop participants will experience fun physical exercises that release body tensions and mental strain, as well as imaginative and critical exercises that bring a high level of articulation to hidden perceptions and understanding.
