approach these issues.
In addition to warm-up games, trust-building exercises and expressive movement, there are three main Theatre of Liberation techniques to be explored in these workshops.
• “Image Theatre” is a series of physical exercises and games designed to uncover essential truths about society, culture, self.
Using their own and others’ bodies as “clay”, participants “sculpt” statues — still images representing their experiences, feelings, ideas, oppressions, and/or dreams.
These sculptures can then be “animated” in almost limitless ways to bring to light the inner realities hidden within the sculptors as well as their subjects.
• “Forum Theatre” is a problem solving exercise in which an unresolved scene of conflict is presented. It is then replayed with the audience invited to stop the action, replace the character they feel is “lacking power” and improvise solutions. This structure can be used to explore past and current situations or as a rehearsal for a future event.
• “The Cop in the Head” is a group of techniques which help individuals explore the internal voices, fears, oppressions which prevent him/her from living fully. Rather than focus on external oppressors and power structures, these techniques bring to light the “cops” inside one’s head.
