In a letter to the editor in the
Rappahannock News of Jan. 23 the Rappahannock County High School wrestling coach raised three issues that strongly imply our public school administrators are little more than bumbling fools whose wish is to hinder our student athletes.
The issues raised are:
• Whenever school is closed for inclement weather, an ‘easy’ blanket decision is made to cancel all sports practices (and other after school events) for the remainder of the day;
• The loss of two practice sessions prior to a recent match in Richmond resulted in his team going 0-4 in the match;
• The wrestling team has the highest GPA of any organization in the schools (and therefore should be deferred to by the administration — my words).
By its wording and tone, the coach’s letter strongly implies that the losses in Richmond came as a direct result of (incorrect) decisions to cancel after school activities on Jan. 16 and 17 when school was closed due to snow.
The statement is made that weather changes from morning to afternoon. Not considered however is the important detail that, due to numerous factors, road conditions may vary significantly within different areas of the county.
