A piece of legislation winding its way through the General Assembly this session promises to be a boon for local vineyards and companies that sell Virginia wine.
The bill will allow licensed companies to ship wine out of state for the first time in many years.
The bill, SB 1117, was patroned by State Senator Emmett W. Hanger < R-24th > of Mount Solon, Ya. He is a member of the Senate State Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee, which is chaired by Senator Charles B. Hawkins (R-19th).
According to the summary of SB 1117. “The bill provides that each sale of wine by a licensed wine shipper to a person in the Commonwealth shall be deemed to be sold in Virginia."
Licensees are required to affix a conspicuous notice on each shipping container reading “Contains alcoholic beverages; signature of person aged 21 or older required for delivery."
It further authorizes the Virginia ABC Board to inspect the premises of any wine shippers' licensee or to engage the services of alcoholic beverage
