Rappahannock County High School students competed for the first time last month in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of American (VICA) Commercial Baking and Culinary Arts district competitions.
Nathan Corbin placed first and David Miller placed fourth in the Commercial Baking competition hosted by RCHS, placing 1st and 4th, respectively. Corbin will go on to compete at the State competition in Virginia Beach in Mar. Bruce Brown represented RCHS in the Culinary Arts competition held at Triplet Thch in Mount Jackson and placed third.
Students are given a time limit of four hours in which to complete a variety of foods. Yeast breads, rolls, muffins, chocolate eclairs and a decorated cake in the Commercial Baking category; and a fennel and mushroom appetizer with an entree of chicken fricassee, brussels sprouts in pecan butter and red potatoes with walnuts and gorgonzola for the Culinary Arts competition. Judges base their decisions on sanitation, presentation, flavor, method and several other criteria.
