High winds caused a power outage the night before the fire at Clifton. Guests lit candles and a fireplace in the living room where the fire started, investigators said. They have eliminated the possibility of an electrical problem or anything of a suspicious nature.
Unlike most bed and breakfasts where innkeepers live on the premises, no employees spent Thursday night at the inn, investigators said. The fire was discovered by a breakfast chef coming to work at 5:15 a m. The fatal blaze caused an estimated $250,000 in damages, not counting the inn's period antiques.
