lhe Rappahannock County High School Band, Band Boosters, Student Council Association and Senior Class hosted a gala Veterans’ Day celebration on Nov. 11 that also marked the band's 21st anniversary.
Guests of honor included RCHS graduates currently in the armed forces as well as scores of Rappahannock veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and recent battles in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Lining the driveway to the school were hundreds of flags inscribed with names of relatives and friends who have served their country.
The Concert Band entertained the veterans, students and school staff with stirring renditions of “Stars and Stripes Forever” and a “Service Medley” of tunes representing the branches of the armed forces.
VFW Post 1150 gave the Presentation of Colors while current RCHS student and Young Marine Stuart Hensley barked the orders.
Col. Nels Parsons, U.S. Army Retired, presented the keynote address which included an explanation of the history of Veterans’ Day in America, the importance of service to country and an admonishment to honor veterans every year, not just in times of war.
Special recognition was given to Rappahannock veterans George Stephenson who earned medals including a President’s Unit Citation for meritorious service in WW II and the Korean War and to Carson Johnson who earned two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for meritorious service in World War II.
