At the Rappahannock
County Board of Supervisors meeting the evening of Nov. 3, the supervisors voted 3-2 to include a third of a mile section of Grimsley Road in the Six Year Secondary Road Construction Plan.
This will allow this section to be designated a rural rustic road and be tarred and chipped. This issue arose when one Grimsley Road resident recently requested the entire road be hard surfaced. However, the majority of Grimsley Road residents and landowners want the road surface to remain gravel. They have voiced their opposition by signing a petition, writing letters and speaking out at two public meetings.
In 2002, approximately a quarter of a mile of Grimsley Road was tarred and chipped to correct a washout problem. The additional third of a mile that was passed at the meeting is a VDOT recommended compromise. It will extend the existing hard surface to the driveway of the resident who originally requested the whole road be hard surfaced. This will cost $30,000. No residents had requested this compromise.
We are concerned this compromise is simply a temporary delay which will lead to the eventual hard surfacing of the entire road. As soon as it is possible, the remaining gravel section will again be an issue.
