The word cemetery derives from the Greek, koimeterion, which means “to lie down and rest.” Perhaps that is why these unique landscapes are not so much morbid and depressing as they are beautiful and peaceful. Visitors read out a name, pause over marked headstones, conjecture about grassy mounds, and reflect on a reality that remains beyond the full grasp of the imagination. Whether a cross, a tablet, or a block with a carved image or the sepia fading of a photo daguerreotype, the grave site is a place of connection as well as remembrance.
