season to encourage travelers to drive safely. Last year, troopers patrolled 273,122 miles and assisted 3,251 motorists with their traveling needs during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Troopers arrested 144 drivers for driving under the influence; issued 7,079 summonses for speeding; 2,376 for reckless driving; 879 for failure to wear safety belts; and 227 for not using child restraints. The 96-hour statistical reporting period for this year will run from Wed., Nov. 26 through Sun., Nov. 30.
During the holiday weekend, troopers will also participate in Checkpoint Strikeforce, a program designed not only to promote safer roadways and protect the lives of motorists, but also act as a deterrent to those motorists who drink and drive.
Last year, nine persons lost their lives on Virginia’s roadways during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period.
