Bennett replied that any answer was “wild speculation,” that it would be “an obligation of the general fund. There are lots of hypotheticals.”

When contacted after the meeting, Tieckelmann said, “(Residents) should know what they are liable for. If the town loses a lawsuit, property owners may be directly assessed the costs, and families can’t afford such an assessment.”

He was disappointed that once more Bennett did not give him a valid answer. “I just want to know. And I’m going to be persistent.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Gene Leggett reported that construction of the town’s wastewater treatment plant should begin in early 2005 and would take about two years to complete. Soil tests are scheduled to begin soon on two possible sites, the Avon Hall property in town, and another site just outside town on Harris Hollow Road.
