“When we started, we had nine truck loads of cars, 70 to 75. Now I carry that many used cars and around 125 new.”
Jacoby picks up some of his used cars at auction, an exercise he’s come to enjoy.
“I love going to car auctions. It’s competitive, and I enjoy that. The other day I sat back here in my office and bid on cars on the Internet for five hours.”
The new models coming out soon should stretch the lots to the limit.
“We’ve got 25 new cars coming out in the next three years, including a PT Cruiser convertible,” Jacoby said.
One new sports car, the Crossfire, recently reached the showroom. Jacoby likes the two-seater, but it has a drawback.
“I can’t fit into it,” he said with a laugh.
There always are trends in the car business, and some are based on recent weather events. The impact of the last winter’s snowstorms seems to be showing up now.
“We didn’t see a lot of people coming in last year to get four-wheel drive during the snow, but we’re seeing them now,” Jacoby said.
“People are coming in and saying, ‘We’re not going to get stuck again.’ They’ve been reading the ‘Farmer’s Almanac’ and looking at the long-term weather forecasts and they don’t want to be stuck like they were last year. It’s amazing.”
Looking at Jacoby’s success, it’s clear that there’s life after a sports career, at least for some.
“I like what I’m doing,” he said. “It’s always changing in this business, always new.”
