2020, the senior population, aged 65 and older, will nearly double.
“We looked at the changing demographics here in this region and decided that we needed to be working together to plan for the future. Then we realized the number of services which were needed to address that growth,” said Sollie Morgan, Director of Support Services for the Rappehannock-Rapidan Community Services Board.
One of the services needed was adult daycare, which would provide daily assistance to caregivers of elderly citizens or disabled adults.
“We found that a lot of people are trying to work and are full-time caregivers, maybe a spouse or a child, but they just.need some time to do personal business and the individual they’re caring for needs a chance to get out, said Morgan. “It really helps both sides of that equation.
Currently, 80 percent of elder care in the region is provided by families, with 44 percent of that care coming from aging spouses. At DayBreak, caregivers can leave their loved ones in an environment where they can enjoy activities and make new friends, while having their medical needs fulfilled.
