Kabul. Beautifully poetic, serene, joyful lives fall apart as first the Russians and then the Taliban destroy life and hope for the Afghans. Kabul must have been a wonderful place to live. You ache to see what was lost by the Afghans, but the film makers generously give us that early glimpse of beauty and happiness.
The story centers on the rape of Hassan, the betrayal by Amir, and how it took several decades for Amir to find redemption. The story was originally a short story that Hosseini wrote when he read that the Taliban had even banished kite flying in Afghanistan. The author, Mr Hosseini, actually grew up in Kabul when* his father was a diplomat.! Kite flying was a major childhood diversion for several generations of Afghani children.). Like the fictional Baba and his son Amir, the Hosseinis fled Kabul as the Russians invaded and eventually end<*d up in California.
