“These programs are set up to reallyhelp people main* - tain their skills and level! off* functioning. They are set up to deal with people with cognitive impairments as well as physical,” said Morgan.
“It doesn’t have to be iust older people, but that tends to be the taiget population."
The Day Break Center is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Caregivers simply drop off adults in the morning for a day of socialization and freedom. Transportation to and from the center is also provided by the RappahannockRopidan Community Services Board/Area Agency on Aging’s van service.
During the day, seniors eryoy activities such as playing cards, writing letters, painting, and talking with friends. They are given a healthy lunch and medication as needed and are encouraged to be as active as possible, with nurses at the center leading group exercise time daily.
“Mostly, they like coming because of the friendships and they know that they have to be active here,” said Langston. “We encourage them to do as much activity as they can.”
Once a month, the group travels outside the center to have lunch in Culpeper. Numerous music groups have also stopped by for entertainment.
“I think most of the adults really eryoy coming here because it gives them time to socialize and they are disappointed on the days they can’t make it,” said Lynnette Scott, R.N. “It gives the caregivers a break, but also gives them the opportunity to know that their loved ones are taken care of every day in a safe environment.”
