He was a statesman and patriot of the Colonial and Revolutionary period.
He was born at Stratford and was educated in England.
He was a recognized leader in the first Continental Congress, in which he sat as a delegate from Virginia.
In 1784 he became president of Congress. The same year he was elected to the Senate from Virginia, after the Federal Constitution was adopted.
The most celebrated of his speeches was made on June 7, 1776, when he introduced before the Congress at Philadelphia the celebrated motion that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states, absolved from all al-4. legiance to the British Crown.”
He opposed some of the provisions of the new Constitution, but he saw that it worked well in practice, and he became a warm supporter of th^ new government.
He was praised by the Earl of Chatham, William Pitt, for the stable address to the king, the^people of England, and the colonies.
