“Every man has the idea of Snaking a. million dollars overnight!—without any work attached” was one of the reasons given in a conversation when the topic was why there are no more small businesses in Rappahannock.
Maybe so; but that eliminates such a person immediately. What js needed in the small business man is a fellow with energy and some horse-sense. "Making a living” in this^day and time, at its best, is a hard job, and a fellow should know what he wants and go after it.
“The little guy gets knocked around by big business,” came one statement. In some places, yes; in Rappahannock, I doubt it.
"Everyone would still go out of the county to do all their business.” Nope. ’Tain’t so. Are you trying to tell me a Rappahannock man would pay , the cost of an out-of-the-county plumber if there were one in the county?
"Not enough business to justify it” goes op the ever-ready pessimist;There it is again. The object is to make a living, enjoy your work, and have a good time Jiving while you’re doing it. The point is agreed: maybe you won’t make that million the first two weeks the new business is open.
It would be interesting to see a list of aM the businesses in the county—and see a list of businesses that are not in the county.
A quick scanning of the numerous communities will show that there’s no dry-cleaning done locally. That bears investigating. Someone said there was no shoe repair shop. Several folks have expressed themselves on the subject that the town of Washington needs « sandwich shop. The belief is expressed that while it might not make a fortune, it would make a living for some industrious person.
The young people of the communities should look carefully about them in their own county before they plan to go away to the big cities to make that million dollars the story books tell.
