Rappahannock Recipe*

SUGAR COOKIES

By: Mr*. Gilbert Updike 4 heaping cups unsifted flour —I ciip shortening 1 '2 tablesp. boiling water 1 teasp. soda—pour boiling water

over soda and dissolve it

1*2 tablesp. vanilla ^ 3 eggs 2 cups sugar

Sift sugar and flour together. Work in shortening. Break 3 unbeaten eggs into -flour and sugar. Put in soda and water and shortening. Work altogether, roll and cut.

Added—sprinkle sugar over top —cook in greased pan or. pinch off a little, roll in palm of hand and flatten out with knife.

NUT CAKE

By Mr*. Elizabeth DeBergh 1 qt. black walnut meats

(floured) 1 pound raisins t> egg’s not separated 3 cups sugar (sifted) 5 cups flour 1 cup milk 2 heaping teasp. baking powder

Mix well and pour in cake mold and bake for 3 hours in a very slow oven. This makes a very large cake or two small ones. If you make a small cake, bake 1 *2 hours.

(Mrs. DeBergh says this recipe was published in the Blue Ridge (1 ide in 1932, and that she absolutely guarantees it.)
