According to reports, Brown stopped at the Lee Highway hotel Tuesday evening about 7 o’clock and inquired of Mrs. Della Howard about finding a place to spend the night. She carried on her conversation with the man through the closed screen door of the hotel and noticed that he carried a package wrapped in a sack which bad the appearance of the shape of a gun. He stated that he was from Maine, but that his birth place was in Rappahannock county, having lived here 18 years ago. His father, so he claimed, was. Nat Brown, formerly employed at Sperryville. He said the purpose, of his visit to the county was to obtain his birth certificate.
Brown was directed to Edward Estes’ store to inquire about finding a suitable tourist home to spend the night. Instead, he stopped at the Sandwich Shop after leaving the hotel, and informed a man there that he had a gun in the sack which he was carrying in his hand. '(
Brown was next reported seen at E. M. Schwartz's store where he bought a soft drink and tried to sell a rifle to Ed Woodard, clerk in the store, for the sum of $5. It is reported that Brown said he had only a small amount of money with him, fi.25, and was in need of more money for he was on his way to Richmond to secure his birth certificate in order to join the army.
Mrs. Virginia Lewis stated that av man answering Brown’s description stopped at her home Tuesday night and that she saw him again the next morning at 5 o’clock, the hour when Mr. Fletcher’s truck was stolen.
The Fletcher truck was parked in the ya.d of Mr*. Lewis’s home, having been driven there the evening before by Buck Lewis. The household was aroused by the starting of the truck. Mr. Lewis wanted to run out in the yard after the thief, but Mrs. Lewis reminded him that he had no gvn and possibly the thief did.
After notifying Trooper Buntin of the direction in which the truck was headed, Mr. Lewis and David Anderson secured another truck and followed the Fletcher pick-up until it was stopped by Trooper Buntin near the L. V. Merrill residence in Washington.
Brown was japprehended and taken to jail. A 32 pistol and a 22 rifle were found in the truck.
The ltfe-ton heavy duty Chevrolet truck belonging to Henry Wood was discovered around 3 o'clock Wednesday morning jammed into the culvert near the home of Miss Annie Stephenson. The front end of the truck was badly damaged with radiator, grill, bumper, and right front, fender smashed.
No damage was done to the Fletcher truck.
