At present seventy per cent of our appie trees are over 20 years old, while better than half of this percentage are over 30 years of age. In 1937 there were 237 commercial apple orchards in Rappahannock containing 216,430 trees of bearing age; today there are only 13b commercial orchards containing only 153,966 trees of bearing age. This represents a 24 per cent decrease in tiie number of apple .trees, while peach tree plantings have decreased 12 per cent. Not only are these figures alarming, but in addition, let’s consider the condition of the trees of bearing ages: 8 per cent excellent, 38 per cent good; 46 per cent fair; 7 per cent poor, and 1 per cent very poor. Condition of peach trees according to this survey made by the State Division of Markets and Division of Agricultural Statistics last fall shows: 57 per cent to be good; 26 per cent fair; and 17 per cent poor.
