Ladino Needs A Healper
For Midsummer Grazing
Ladino clover needs a helper in dry, hot weather when it comes to providing' grazing for livestock.
Ladino will not make much growth in such weather because of its shallow root system.
So Extension Serice agronomists at VPI suggest seeding 2# to 2o pounds of lespedeza per acre on small grain plantings anytimte from now until about March 15. The lespedeza, an excellent supplemnetary mid-summer pasture, will have desirable growth by the time ladino slumps.
Eight to 10 pounds of orchard grass per acre may be added to the lespedeza for lusher growth.
If you plan to topdress the small grains, no other fertilizer is needed. If the lespedeza is an old stand, apply 800 to 1,000 pounds of 20 per cent superphosphate.
