Meeting In Lynchburg
The first annual meeting of the Virginia Chapter, Soil Conservation Society of America, will be held in Lynchburg, March 18, T. W. Edminster, soil conservation researcher at Virginia Experiment Station, and program chai.man, announces.
The address of welcome will be given at 10:30 a.m. by the chapter president, H. M. Collins, Chase City, district conservationist for the Southside Soil Conservation District.
T. S. Buie, Spartanburg, S. C., past president of the national society, and regional director of the southeastern region of the Soil Conservation Service, will give the principal morning address on “The Society and You.”
An address by Forest Steele, soil scientist at Farmville, on “The National Meeting—A Builder of Morale,” will conclude the morning session.
The keynote speaker, scheduled to appear at the luncheon session, will be announced later.
The meeting will adjourn after a business meeting and election of officers.
Commenting on the organization of th Virginia chapter, Edminster says such a professional society gives opportunity to “acquaint the entire membership with developments in their particular field . . . the fact that soil conservation is a recognized science embracing agronomy, engineering, soils, biology, forestry . . makes it important that these specialists have a common meeting ground and a place to develop a common approach to their problems.”
He pointed out that ‘in recognition of its interest in the advancement of science, the Soil Conservation Society has been admitted as an associated society of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.”
Section officers are: Collins, chairman; Francis Carr, Appomattox, vice-chairman; Dabney Williamson, Rocky Mount, secretary-treasurer; T. C. Green, assistant st^te co reservation ist, Blacksurg, and Edminster, councilmen.
Collins and Carr, both district conservationists, also serve on the arrangements committee; Green, Wil’iamson, and Edminster on the program committee.
