Soil Saver Notes
Construction on three farm ponds is now underway in Rappahannock county. Charles E. Marsh Washington, is constructing a 2acre pond and Elmer J. Nolls, also of Washington, is constructing a 0.7-acre pond. Construction on the James K. Vardaman pond is progressing in spite ,of the adverse weather conditions. All of the above mentioned farmers either have developed or are in the process of developing a complete farm plan for their respective farms. The Culpeper Soil Conservation District Supervisors are interested in developing complete farm plans on all the farms in the district. In order to receive fish for stocking ponds through the district, the supervisors specify that the farmer first develop a complete plan in co-operation with the district. Miss Helen Chanel has established 10 acres of contour strips on her farm, locatlfd £ miles north of Culpeper. Rotation in contour strips are established on sloping cropland to prevent soil erosion and excessive loss of rainfall. Saving rainfall in the soil is of vital importance in producing a maximum yield of corn. Run-off water takes with it fertilizer, lime, soil and in many cases seed that may have recently been planted on the field. _Other farmers who have established contour strips for the first time this year include: J. Mai-, colm Hill, Culpeper; A. H. Spilman, Boston; Jack Wall, Culpeper; Walter Petty, White Shop; 0. P. Yowell, Culpeper; Carl J. Smith, Rixeyville; all Culpeper county farmers. Rappahannock county farmers include: Fannie P. Eastham, Flint Hill, and Fred Hitt, Castleton.
