tal has surely furnished neat for conversation. Everyone admits the county decrease is cause for alarm but like most pleasant conversation, it isn’t all frightening, for a lighter vein jumps in at times.
"Well, there was a time back when things were different,1* stated one Rappahannock ' man. "A fellow owned a few acres up on the mountain, he had a cow and a coupla’ pigs and a garden, and he managed to eat and feed his family. If any cash was needed, he could go down and work a week or two on one of the farins and earn a few spare dollars. Then things began to change. The kids, went to school and learned about inside plumbing and modern living. Ma went to the home demonstration meeting and learned about fancy kitchens and automatic washing machines. Pa began to find a car was necessary for his mental health, and there justf wasn’t enough from his working about on farms. The farm owners couldn’t pay him more, so he went somewhere out of the county to find the higher paying job. The farm owner had to turn to mechanization, in order to get his farm Work done. "There’s the answer to higher taxes,” said another citizen of the county. “A certain amount of money is needed for county ex■ penses; whoever is here has it to pay. Fewer people, higher taxes. That makes sense.”
The discussions go on. One fellow said that when the numbers in the county jwent down, we should have chosen a few to be on the list of those missing. “Let me Tix the population: I’d get rid of all the triflin’ ones and I’d just re-populate the county with duplicates of—” and here the fellow began to name some of the h£St citizens. The comment of the listeners was, "That wouldn’t be any county, boy, that’d be Utopia.”
