Highway Accidents In
Rappahannock Increase
Six 1949 highway deaths earn* pared unfavorably with two for 1948 and sent Rappahannock county from 87th to 90th place among Virginia’s 100 counties in the death-per-vehide-miles travelled standing, E. M. Jones, chairman of the Rappahannock Safety Council announced today.
Final statistics compiled by the Governor's Highway Safety Committee gave the county a mileage death rate of 25.6 which sky-’ rockets above the comparatively modest 9.9 of 1948. In addition, he said, reported accidents jumped from 45 to 66 and injured from 25 to 42. Improvement was noted in the town of Washington, which reported only one accident, which was three leas than in 1948. No one was injured while one injury was reported for 1948.
Five of the deaths occurred on Route 211. Three were chalked up when fast-moving automobiles went out of control on curves to overturn and strike fixed objects, one when an unlighted, horsedrawn wagon <was struck, and one when a driver lost control attempting to avoid another which was passing a stopped truck.
