Of Mrs. Guy Burke
Mrs. Guy Burke, Mrs. James M. Lillard, and Mrs. Jack Petty were hostesses to the Woman’s Society ' of Christian Service, Thursday evening, May 11, at the home of - Mrs. Guy Burke. Nineteen members and three visitors being present. The devotions were led by Mrs. Gilbert Updike. The study on “Christianizing Our Homes” was given by Mrs. Eugene Wagner, assisted by Mrs. Mabel Raaer, Misses Ethel Jenkins, Janet Sollenberger, Mrs. Ora Ramey, and Mrs. Rowzie.
The following officers were elected for the year beginning June 1st: Mrs. Ora Ramey, president; Mrs. Edna Walker, vice president and secretary of spiritual life; Mrs. Bertha. Compton, secretary and treasurer^ Mrs)! Ada Updike, secretary of Missionary Education; Mrs. Jessie Rowzie secretary of Christian Social Relations and Christian Church Activities.
During the social hour Mrs. Jack Petty was showered with many gifts. Delicious refreshments were served.
John Haywood Wood
Mrs. W. C. Stout of Lignum leceived word Tuesday of the death of her brother, John Haywood Wood.
Mr. Wood, 82, died May 15 in a veteran's hospital in Louisville, Ky. A veteran of the SpanishAmerican war and of three years in the Philippines, Mr. Wood had been in the hospital following an accident three years ago when he broke his hip.
Interment was in a National cemetery in Louisville.
Born in Rappahannock in 1868, Mr. Wood, son of George and Martha Grimsley Wood, left the county August 2, 1892 and was unable to revisit his home. He planned many times to return to see his only surviving sister, Mrs. Georgia Wood Stout, but circumstances prevented.
