First Baptist Charch
The -church at present has a membership of about 140.
The first place of worship for the congregation was in the old Reform Episcopal church which stood on the lot now owned by Mrs. Jenkins and Ashby Wayland. The congregation worshipped there a few years and then built the present church, which was remodeled during the pastorate of Rev. James S. Fields and during the pastorate of Rev. D. H. Banks the steeple and Vestibule were added and the church lengthened. While Rev. I. D. Richards was pastor, cathedral windows were installed.
Rev. Davis will be the sixth pastor of the congregation since the organization of the church. Rev. George Horner was the first pastor, serving eight years; Rev. James S. Fields, second, serving 20 years; Rev. James S. Woodson, third, serving two years; Rev. D. H. Banks, fourth, serving 38 years and is still honorary pastor; and ReV. Isadore D. Richards, fifth, serving three years.
The historical information of the First Baptist church of Washington was ftfrnished by P. S. Green, the church clerk.
