Aside from the mecnanics of printing (interesting mainly to a printer), changes have taken place in the books printed. The first printing was the Bible. Today printing of the Bible is still a large portion, but most printed matter strays far from the Scriptures.
From the first printing-of the Bible to the “Freedom of the Press” today there stands a long history of printing, its use and -abuse.' Just ..as yse recognize the., price paid for our freedom of the press, we realize that it has been an immense struggle through the past 500 years for a man’s right to use printing for his own good. In earlier American history men were imprisoned for daring to criticize the government. That sounds odd to us to think that our freedom-lo>ing forefathers, who had suffered at Valley Forge, would permit infringement - upon their rights. It’s. 150 years later now, and our American printing press is as free as any in the world. The “freedom of the press” today is a costly heritage. Today when a man wishes to “blow off,” he does so in a newspaper. He lets off steam in the direction of any1 other man—from the President of the United States on down—signs his name to it and has it printed in the paper. Sometimes he gets in hot water for it; sometimes the fellow on the receiving end of the abuse laughs it off and forgets it.
The paper itself stands on middle ground. It may completely disagree—or thoroughly agree — with the sentiments expressed by the writer of a “letter to the editor,” but agreeing or disagreeing has no factor in the publishing. If the paper chooses, it may decide against the publication, hiding behind some phrase like “no space available” or “contrary to the good of the community,” or some other excuse. Of course, if the writer decides he wants to pay for the publicatkm as adver* tising matter, then the paper (would have to squirm considerably to get out of printing the letter.
Like all privileges, often the “freedom of the press” is abused.
When it is recalled that a man —Tyndale by name—was killed for printing the Bible, it shames most of us when we see how the printing freedom is used today.
It boils down to the fellow’s famous statement: “I may not agree with what you say, but I’ll fight for your right to say it.”
